What is cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is a condition that evolves from chronic liver diseases when liver cells are damaged and replace by scar tissue. This condition will decrease the amount of normal liver tissue. The scar tissue will distort the normal liver structure and interfere with the blood flow through the liver. With the loss of normal liver tissue, 100% of critical liver performance is hampered.

What causes cirrhosis?

Various conditions contribute to cirrhosis:

• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Chronic vial hepatitis, types B,C and D
• Primary biliary cirrhosis – an autoimmune liver disease especially affecting women
• Primary sclerosing cholangiis – a bile duct disease
• Prolonged exposure to environmental toxins
• Some forms of heart disease
• Schistosomiasis – a parasitic infection
• Inherited congenital diseases

What are the symptoms of cirrhosis?

In the beginning, cirrhosis is often silent with few identifiable symptoms. As the scarring and destruction continue, the following signs and symptoms may appear:

1. Loss of appetite
2. Nausea and vomiting
3. Weight loss
4. Enlargement of the liver
5. Jaundice – a yellow discoloration of the whites of the eyes and skin
6. Itching – due to retention of bile products in the skin
7. Ascites – abdominal swelling due to an accumulation of fluid caused by the obstruction of blood flow through the liver
8. Vomiting of blood
9. Increased sensitivity to drugs
10. Encephalopathy – subtle mental changes advancing to extreme confusion and coma
